FOUNDATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS

Profile:
The Foundation For Development Of Democratic Rights (DemNet) is a Hungarian, non-profit organisation with the objective to build a democratic civil society in Hungary, in Central Eastern Europe, and other developing and undeveloped countries. Its objective is to execute innovative programs to ensure the sustainable operation of the not-for-profit sector, and as a long-term aim wishes to contribute to the consolidation of democratic transitional procedures, and to the strengthening of institutional and value structures.

Activities:
Primarily, the foundation wish to fulfil its mission by funds, aids and their mediation, and trough the transmission of knowledge and information serving the criteria mentioned above. In its activities treats co-operation (especially cross-sectors), professionalism, transparency, locality, and sustainability as basic values.
The organisation on an international level carries out programs - besides its Hungarian activities - in several countries of the Balkan region. With the support of Sasakawa Peace Foundation, in co-operation with a Slovakian foundation, works together with Serbian not-for-profit organisations on lobbying for civil rights and values. With the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a program started in May 2004, where the foundation shares the findings of community development and advocacy experience of NGOs in Hungary, while organising trainings and study tours, with the assistance of partners from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Within the frame of the HAPI program, foreign experts from Eastern Europe and Central Asia arrive on study tours to observe Hungary's transitional experience in relation to public administration, media, economy and the various aspects of civil society. DemNet treats the strengthening of Hungary's role in the region, and the transmission of Hungarian knowledge and experience to several countries, as a future challenge.
DemNet - under a World Bank assignment - operates the Small Grants program, through which 11 organisations receive grants and are provided professional assistance during program implementation.
