CENTRE FOR INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM
Profile:
The Budapest based Independent Journalism Foundation (Centre
for Independent Journalism) was founded in 1995 by the Independent
Journalism Foundation of New York. Free form political commitment,
the Centre for Independent Journalism is a unique not-for-profit
organisation in Hungary, which offers education programs
for national and local media.
The mission of the foundation is to improve the ethic and
professional standards of national journalism through its
various programs, to strengthen the independence of media,
to protect freedom of speech, and to support unbiased reporting
in the media.
Activities:
The Centre for Independent Journalism lays special emphasis
on providing equal opportunities to both, local-regional
and mainstream media. The Centre for Independent Journalism
aims to support minority groups through specialised training
programs designed to prepare Roma youth for professional
journalism, and also organises PR programs for other NGOs.
Highlighted activities (1995-2003):
- Over 800 local television and radio associates participated
in editor-reporter and media management programs during
the initial five years of the operation of CIJ.
- Between 1996 and 2001 over 200 editors, reporters, and
managers completed the intensive courses of BBC in the Centre
for Independent Journalism.
- In recent years, 15 prominent American media experts held
professional trainings - mainly in regional editorial offices
- under the handling of the foundation. CIJ provided qualifications
for 62 Roma journalists within the frame of 10 months-long
intensive courses.
- The library of Centre for Independent Journalism offers
its services free of charge for several hundred journalists
and students.
- The Independent Journalism Foundation is a founding member
of the South East European Network for Professionalisation
of the Media. Since 2000, CIJ recruited 50 Hungarian journalists
in courses organised by partner institution, and hosted
just as many from the countries of the region. CIJ has also
organised Hungarian study tours for media experts from Bosnia,
Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Macedonia, and Croatia.
