ASTARTE FOUNDATION - WOMEN WORLD WIDE

Profile:
Our foundation was established in Budapest at the beginning of 2004 by a private individual. Our goals are to protect women reproductive health, work for women education and rights, promote gender equality and empower women world wide. The Astarte Foundation’s main focus is to protect the women reproductive health but because women empowerment cannot be restricted to one subject, the Foundation promotes women involvement in social-, legal-, economical- and artistic issues. According to Report of the UN Secretary-General on implementation of the Millennium Declaration Goals promoting gender disparity in primary and secondary education continues to be a challenge. Gender biases, early marriage, threats to the physical and emotional security of girls and gender insensitive curricula can all conspire against the realization of the fundamental right to education for girls. Short-changing girls is not only a matter of gender discrimination but is bad economics and bad social policy. Experience has shown over and over again that investment in girls’ education translates directly and quickly into better nutrition for the whole family, better health care, declining fertility, poverty reduction and better overall performance.

Activities:
To accomplish the goals the Astarte Foundation will build a world wide organization in the next 5 years focusing on the developing world and Eastern-Europe, and with programs for developed countries. To accomplish this, we will start international collaborations with other local- and international NGOs, UN institutions, EU institutions, local governments, pharmaceutical and other companies and individuals. We are looking for support and volunteers world wide. The Astarte Foundation is a politically independent organization; the Foundation has only voluntary workers. Our ongoing projects are: to grant a package of household commodities to all Hungarian obstetrical and gynecological departments; to deliver a series of lectures for high-school girls across Hungary; a public awareness program in Hungary throughout the media; and to start our sister foundations in the USA (San Francisco), South-Africa and Kazahstan.
