Promises but no real actions yet…
2005.09.15.
Press conference in front of the Hungarian Parliament with Fair Trade coffee.
On 14 September, on the first day of the UN Summit, a demonstration was organised in front of the Hungarian Parliament. We held up a 12 meter long white band with boards listing facts about the number of victims of hunger and aids and the lack of actions in giving aid to and cancelling debts of the developing countries.

Press conference in front of the Hungarian Parliament with Fair Trade coffee
On 14 September, on the first day of the UN Summit, a demonstration was organised in front of the Hungarian Parliament. We held up a 12 meter long white band with boards listing facts about the number of victims of hunger and aids and the lack of actions in giving aid to and cancelling debts of the developing countries.
To visualise our message, we placed stuffed canvas bags with dollar, euro and Hungarian Forint signs on them on top of a table and we stuck a fake horse leg in between them, referring to a Hungarian saying that literally goes „The horse’s leg is sticking out”, which means that something stinks (i.e.: there is corruption, dishonesty, etc.).
Our spokesperson summarised our message and explained in a few words our open letter addressed to the Hungarian politicians, and especially to the Hungarian delegation that participated in the summit. We asked our politicians to make statements according to the Millennium Goals and influence the outcome of the summit as much as they can so that the Millennium Goals will be reaffirmed and new commitments with deadlines will be made in the final Declaration of the UN Summit.
On the occasion we invited the press for a fair trade coffee to demonstrate that fair trade is an already existing alternative way of trading that instead of exploiting the producer in the third world, ensures a fairer price, a long term trading partnership and democratic decision making.
The followings were present at the demonstration:
- 20 activists
- Press: journalist and photographer from the National News Agency, Hungarian National Television, a journalist and a photographer from the biggest national daily paper, a journalist from a national political and cultural magazine, Austrian National Radio
The demonstration was organised by HAND (Hungarian Association of NGOs for Development and Humanitarian Aid) and one of the member NGOs in Hand: Védegylet (Protect the Future)
Media coverage so far:
- a telephone interview given to one of the leading Hungarian radio stations (Info Radio)
- an article in the biggest national daily newspapers
- an article in the on-line version of the same national daily newspaper
